  • Start with real problems: Identify choke points like gift entry, segmentation, event follow-up, volunteer tracking, and reporting. These should be day-one wins with any CRM you pick. 
  • Check for nonprofit-specific features: I’ve come across repurposed sales CRMs pretending to be nonprofit CRMs. Always look for platforms built to handle recurring gifts, pledges, soft credits, tributes, multi-channel campaigns, and event fundraising right out of the box. Native nonprofit workflows lead to quicker adoption and fewer headaches down the line.
  • Evaluate reporting capabilities: Reporting is often overlooked until it slows everything down. You should be able to answer questions like ‘who hasn’t given in 18 months?’ or ‘which segments convert best?’ without needing a data analyst.
